This catalogue compares two contrasting émigré sculptors and examines how their work responded to and was inspired by non-Western cultures. Jacob Epstein and Dora Gordine were members of a group of talented Anglo-Jewish artists known as the 'Whitechapel Boys', who were all born, raised or worked in London's East End in the early 20th century. The Whitechapel Boys had a huge impact on 20th century British art, in particular British Modernism.

There is an introduction by Sir Anthony Caro and contributions from writer and critic Richard Cork, Dr. Jonathan Black, current AHRB Research Fellow at Kingston University (home of the Gordine archive), Brenda Martin, Curator, Dorich House, and Victor Arwas, writer, gallerist and collector. The publication uncovers new insights into Epstein's career and rediscovers Gordine's long-neglected talents.
